Hideo Kojima has provided insights into the upcoming film adaptation of his acclaimed game, Death Stranding, which is being produced in partnership with A24. Unlike many who anticipated a high-budget blockbuster, Kojima envisions a more artistic and innovative approach.
In an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Kojima and director Alex Garland discussed the film's direction. Kojima emphasized that he never intended to direct the movie himself, focusing instead on the production and storyline. He rejected offers from other producers that promised a big budget with plenty of explosions, opting for a unique collaboration with A24.
"A24's films are of high quality and very innovative," Kojima stated. "We're not just translating the game into a movie; we want to create a film that will appeal to anyone who loves cinema, not just fans of the game." This approach aligns with A24's reputation for producing unconventional and high-quality films, such as Hereditary, Uncut Gems, and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The film, which does not yet have a release date or a confirmed cast, aims to delve into the mysteries of the apocalyptic event known as the "Death Stranding." This event blurred the lines between life and death, introducing nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse.
Kojima's vision is to create a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, one that can only be fully realized through the medium of film. He is committed to ensuring that the movie will be an original work, rather than a direct adaptation of the game.
For now, the project remains in its early stages, with no director or cast announced. However, the partnership between Kojima Productions and A24 promises an exciting and innovative take on the Death Stranding universe, one that will appeal to a broad audience beyond just gamers.
