Steam Launches: Path of Exile 2 Surpasses Expectations
This year's biggest Steam launch is still Black Myth: Wukong, followed closely by Palworld. These two games broke records, reaching 2.4 million and 2.1 million concurrent players at their peak respectively. The only game to have achieved a higher concurrent player count is PUBG, which peaked at an impressive 3.2 million players.
Moving down the rankings, we have Helldivers 2, with a peak of 458,000 concurrent Steam players. However, a new RPG has now taken the third spot, despite its early release status. The game in question is Path of Exile 2, which has been gaining traction steadily, even outperforming fellow newcomer Marvel Rivals.
Path of Exile 2: Rising Star
For those interested in Path of Exile 2, it's currently available in Early Access for $29.99. Despite some minor issues like error screens, performance problems, and design flaws, the game has received a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam. The game is an innovative next-generation free-to-play Action RPG from Grinding Gear Games, featuring co-op for up to six players.
What to Expect from Path of Exile 2
According to the official description, the game takes place in the dark continent of Wraeclast, where a sinister threat is unfolding. The game's world is home to unique cultures, ancient secrets, and monstrous dangers. While drawing inspiration from Diablo, Path of Exile 2 seems to be surpassing its inspirations, outperforming Diablo 4's Steam concurrent peak of 55,000 players.
Pre-order Buzz and Genre Success
The success of Path of Exile 2 shouldn't come as a surprise. The Action RPG genre is extremely popular on Steam, and the first game was a sleeper hit with growth fueled by the developer's post-launch support. The game's developers, Grinding Gear Games, have cleverly built anticipation for the sequel over the past 11 years.
