Elden Ring 2: Hopes Dashed or Postponed?

Elden Ring, one of the most successful games of all-time, has taken the gaming world by storm since its launch in 2022. With a whopping 30 million copies sold across all platforms and numerous Game of the Year awards, fans were naturally assuming that a sequel, Elden Ring 2, would be a top priority for developer FromSoftware. However, in a recent interview with IGN Japan, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki threw cold water on these hopes.

No Immediate Plans for Elden Ring 2

According to Miyazaki, FromSoftware is not currently considering a sequel to the open-world action title. While this news might disappoint fans, there is still a glimmer of hope for the Elden Ring franchise to expand "in some form in the future." Whether this would involve a new video game, TV series, movie, or something else entirely remains to be seen.

Is a Sequel Still on the Cards?

It's unlikely that Elden Ring 2 will never come to fruition. FromSoftware seems to have a strong interest in revisiting the world of Elden Ring, and publisher Bandai Namco will undoubtedly push the studio to create a sequel given the original game's massive commercial success. As such, a sequel would be more surprising if it never happened.

Potential Complications Ahead

One potential roadblock to Elden Ring 2 is the acquisition of FromSoftware's parent company, Kadokawa, by Sony. While this deal has yet to materialize, it could potentially put Sony in control of FromSoftware and complicate the licensing tied to Elden Ring. However, it's worth noting that FromSoftware owns the Elden Ring IP outright, meaning that a sequel could still be published by any company.

Focus on the Present: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

For now, fans of Elden Ring can focus on the newly released Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, which has proven to be nearly a full new game unto itself. This expansion has been incredibly popular, even earning a spot as a contender for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, taking place on December 12th.
