Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel as Doctor Doom

In a shocking revelation at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Robert Downey Jr. announced his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time in a surprising new role: the villainous Doctor Doom.

Downey Jr. will star as Victor von Doom in two upcoming Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 2027). These films will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

The Russo brothers expressed their excitement about returning to the MCU, particularly for Avengers: Secret Wars, which they described as "the biggest story Marvel Comics ever told." They emphasized that Doctor Doom is a crucial character for this epic storyline.

The panel also included announcements about the Fantastic Four, with Joseph Quinn as Human Torch Johnny Storm and Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm. The event featured a hovering Fantasticar on stage, adding to the excitement.

Additionally, the MCU will see the debut of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine, and David Harbour will appear as Red Guardian in the Thunderbolts film.

Production Details

The Russo brothers' production company, AGBO, will collaborate with Marvel Studios on these films. Stephen McFeely, known for his work on the Captain America trilogy and Avengers: Endgame, will write the scripts.
