The Promo Icon Conundrum in Pokémon TCG Pocket

A Visual Complaint in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) has been a staple in the real-life Pokémon universe for years, with promo stamps and special packs adding an extra layer of excitement for collectors. Mobile app Pokémon TCG Pocket has followed suit, introducing special sets of Promo Cards that can be earned through events like the Venusaur Drop Solo Battle event or Wonder Pick events. However, these promo cards come with a problem: the size and placement of the promo icon.

The Issue with Promo Icon Placement

The promo icon in Pokémon TCG Pocket appears in the right-hand center of the card, which can obstruct the stunning artwork on certain cards, such as the full illustration Venusaur. This placement is particularly jarring on cards with beautiful, immersive artwork that draws players into the world of the Pokémon.

A Call to Action: Reconsidering Promo Icon Placement

In response to this issue, some players have jokingly enlarged the promo icon to cover the entire card, highlighting the problem with its current placement. One player suggested moving the badge to the bottom of the card for fully illustrated cards, but unfortunately, the game has not implemented this change.

Comparison with Physical Pokémon TCG

While the physical Pokémon TCG places promo icons in the bottom right corner of the illustration panel, Pokémon TCG Pocket leaves them in the middle, where they disrupt the original artwork. This is particularly evident on cards like Venusaur, where the promo badge blocks part of the Pokémon's back and nap spot.

A Plea for Better Design

Many collectors use Pokémon TCG Pocket to admire the beautiful artwork, and the promo badges can detract from this experience. A small complaint, perhaps, but a valid one. With so much unique and interesting Pokémon artwork to enjoy, players don't want their experience interrupted by less attractive badges that prioritize rarity over aesthetics.
