The Forgotten Elder Scrolls Game on the Brink of Disappearance
With a vast array of mainline games like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it's easy to overlook the spin-offs in the iconic Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda has developed a fair number of these, including recent titles like The Elder Scrolls: Castles, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, and The Elder Scrolls Online. However, one of these spin-offs is about to bid farewell for good.
What's Fading into Oblivion?
None other than The Elder Scrolls: Legends, a card game spin-off launched in 2017. The game emerged in response to the massive success of Hearthstone but failed to garner a substantial player base. As a result, Bethesda ceased ongoing support for the title in 2019.
Despite a lack of updates over the past five years, The Elder Scrolls: Legends has remained accessible for those curious about the game. Now, instead of maintaining the status quo, Bethesda has decided to pull the plug on Legends by shutting down its servers at the end of January 2025. Additionally, the game will be removed from Steam, making it impossible for new players to obtain it.
A Farewell Message
Bethesda informed players of the impending shutdown through an in-game message:
"The Elder Scrolls: Legends servers will permanently shut down on January 30, 2025. From now until January 30, 2025, all items in the store and entry into in-game events will be available for one gold each, so you can enjoy all the content Legends has to offer. On that date, servers will be shut down and the game will be inaccessible. Thank you for playing and we hope you have enjoyed your time in Legends."
A Bittersweet Decision
While it's disappointing to see The Elder Scrolls: Legends come to an end, it's hard to fault Bethesda for this decision. With no future updates in sight and an dwindling player base, maintaining the game's servers only drains resources. If you're feeling sentimental about the closure, you still have a few months to experience the game before it disappears into the ether.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, it's a reminder that not every game can stand the test of time. The Elder Scrolls: Legends may be fading into memory, but its legacy remains a part of the beloved Elder Scrolls series.
